19th Century American Variable Star Quilt

£0.00
sold out

Circa 1860, what truly sets this quilt apart funnily enough, apart from it's wonderfully busy front..... is its back!
At first glance, it may seem unassuming, even plain or boring, however, a closer inspection reveals a delightful surprise, just look closer, and closer, and closer, from further out you cannot see it, but close up they are there, a pattern of red rosy apples.
The fabric choice suggests a lady with a discerning taste for quality, eschewing ordinary feed sacks for something truly special.
A captivating piece of history, this 19th Century American Variable Star Quilt showcases a mix of beautiful fabrics.
In the mid-nineteenth century, the availability of a greater variety of cotton fabric in the USA revolutionized quilt-making.
The influx of American textile mills in the 1830s provided women, even in remote areas, with a broader choice of fabrics, fuelling their creative imaginations.
Constructed in the traditional design of an eight-pointed star, this quilt is a lightweight gem with no batting.
Sized at 80cm x 79cm, it is in excellent unwashed condition, displaying only a couple of tiny stains, a common occurrence for quilts of this age.
Gorgeous front AND back, a lovely lovely design piece.
