Peal & Co Copper Shop Window Advertising Display Boot
Copper Peal & Co Shop Window Display boot….which we have to admit has been used as a great umbrella stand!
Peal & Co manufactured footwear from 1565 until 1965, but the company name does not appear until 1791 when it moved to London from Durham and Derby.
They became one of the largest, prestigious, and most productive of London's nineteenth-century manufacturers.
The company quickly grew, moving to premises at 7 Frederick Street off Tottenham Court Road and then to 11 Duke Street in 1830, 487 Oxford Street in 1886 and finally 48 Wigmore Street in 1958.
Royalty, aristocrat's and celebrities flocked to their shop and the company's records count Fred Astaire, Gary Cooper, Rex Harrison, Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart, Barry Goldwater, Conde Nast, Teddy Roosevelt, JFK, Laurence Olivier, Charles Chaplin, amongst their clients.
The company was held within the family until 1965 when they were bought by Brooks Brothers who kept the name and logo for a premium line.
The boot has the size/make stamped into it DAFNA COTTAGE XXL 40, also Made in Israel.
Dafna boots were made by Dafna Industries based in Israel, they were founded in 1964 and sold internationally so we surmise this was made for them towards the end of Peal & Co's time in 1965.
